Abstract: In recent decades, global warming‐driven ocean stratification has profoundly affected nutrient cycling. As the largest marginal sea in the northwestern Pacific, the South China Sea (SCS) provides a representative setting to examine these responses. Based on two decades of temperature, salinity, and nutrient datasets, we quantified the evolution of stratification in the SCS, its impacts on the upward transport of deep‐water phosphate (PO 4 3− ), and the resulting changes in carbon sink. Results show an increasing intensification of stratification, with an upward shift of the thermocline's upper boundary, a downward shift of its lower boundary, increased thickness, and weakened vertical mixing. Despite enhanced external inputs from rivers and atmospheric deposition and reduced phytoplankton consumption of PO 4 3− in the mixed layer, PO 4 3− concentrations have declined persistently, indicating a substantial reduction in nutrient flux from the deep water across the thermocline into the surface layer. The minimum net reduction of PO 4 3− in the upper water column (mixed layer plus thermocline) was −0.047 Gmol·yr −1 . This decline in PO 4 3− supply constrained primary production and reduced CO 2 uptake, leading to an estimated carbon sink reduction of 2.21 × 10 5 t CO 2 ·yr −1 in the SCS.

Abstract: Remobilized terrestrial organic carbon from permafrost‐affected landscapes is increasingly recognized as a key component of Arctic carbon cycling. In this study, we investigated the sources of particulate organic carbon in the surface mixed layers across the Mackenzie Trough by combining dual‐isotope analyses (Δ 14 C org , δ 13 C org ) with molecular biomarkers (lignin phenols). Building on previous sediment‐based source apportionment approaches, we assessed their applicability to suspended particulate matter collected along a shelf‐to‐slope transect in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. To address uncertainties in end‐member composition, we implemented a Monte Carlo‐based mixing model that integrates multiple geochemical tracers, including Δ 14 C org , δ 13 C org , 3,5‐dihydroxybenzoic acid to vanillyl phenols (3,5‐Bd/V) ratio, and lignin phenol concentrations. Our results showed that petrogenic organic carbon contributed substantially, ranging from 11% to 53%, to particulate organic carbon in both the upper and lower polar mixed layers. These findings provide direct evidence for the presence of petrogenic organic carbon in Arctic surface waters and highlight its active role in shelf carbon dynamics. The persistence of this ancient, refractory carbon pool in suspension emphasizes the need to include petrogenic organic carbon in assessments of terrestrial carbon mobilization, transformation, and burial in a rapidly warming Arctic.

Abstract: Despite the importance of coastal areas for the transfer of selenium (Se) from rivers to the open ocean and its bioavailability to food webs, dissolved Se concentrations and speciation in these ecosystems remain poorly understood. We conducted a 3‐yr study with monthly water column sampling at five stations spanning from the North Sea to the central Baltic Sea, capturing large gradients of salinity, redox conditions, and biological productivity to quantify dissolved Se species and characterize Se speciation across environmental gradients over time. Despite remarkably similar total dissolved Se concentrations (66 ± 17 ng·L −1 ) across all sub‐basins, Se speciation showed contrasting spatial and vertical patterns. Marine‐influenced waters from the North Sea were dominated by bioavailable inorganic oxidized Se species (selenite: Se IV and selenate: Se VI ), while the brackish Baltic Proper was enriched in reduced organic and elemental Se (Se −II + Se 0 ). Vertical profiles showed consistent Se IV depletion in surface waters, indicating biological uptake across all stations, while Se −II + Se 0 exhibited both production during periods of high phytoplankton biomass and subsequent vertical transport, leading to accumulation in hypoxic and euxinic waters. These contrasting patterns suggest fundamentally different speciation and transformation regimes: well‐mixed marine systems maintain efficient recycling of bioavailable inorganic Se through frequent water exchange, whereas the permanently stratified Baltic system creates a significant sink for reduced Se species in oxygen‐depleted deep waters. Our results demonstrate how water column structure and redox conditions control Se bioavailability and fate in coastal systems, with implications for understanding micronutrient dynamics in expanding oxygen minimum zones and climate‐driven changes in coastal stratification.

Abstract: Long-term coastal monitoring networks provide the opportunity to evaluate how water-quality predictability varies across contrasting coastal bays. However, most machine learning studies focused on individual stations, optically active variables or short validation periods. We analyze 37 years (1986-2023) of monthly in-situ data from 94 stations across four Hong Kong Bay systems Central Harbours, Eastern Bays, Southern Bays, and Western Bays to test whether empirical predictability and highest-ranked water-quality predictors vary systematically with regional hydrography. Eight parameters: ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite nitrogen; dissolved oxygen; pH; salinity; temperature; and chlorophyll-a were assessed. Five machine-learning models Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting (GB), XGBoost (XGB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were evaluated under chronological 70/30 split with Bayesian-optimised hyperparameters. Tree-based ensembles produced the most stable performance overall, with strong performance for temperature and salinity, moderate-to-variable performance for selected nutrient species, and weak transferability for dissolved oxygen and pH. Chlorophyll-a remained among the least predictable variables across most bay systems under the chronological validation framework. SHAP analysis revealed regional transition in predictor structure: salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen dominated mixing-structured Central, Eastern and Southern systems, while nitrate and ammonia became more important in Pearl River-influenced Western Bays. Long-term analyses indicated a declining pH trend in the urbanised Central Harbours and Southern and Western Bays, whereas Eastern Bays remained comparatively stable. These findings provide regional benchmark for empirical water-quality predictability under chronological validation and identify the need to incorporate lagged hydrometeorological, watershed and discharge variables for future forecasting applications.

Abstract: Given the similarities in their instrumental characteristics, a comparative analysis was conducted between hyperspectral missions of PRISMA, operated by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and EnMAP, developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). This work investigates both the similarities and discrepancies between these two satellite optical data, providing an outline of the spectral regions where data from both sensors can be reliably interchanged. The analysis was performed by analyzing the full visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectrum and by examining selected spectral ranges sensitive to key environmental parameters, such as nitrogen dioxide, chlorophyll and NDVI. A total of 11 PRISMA and EnMAP co-located hyperspectral image pairs acquired across different seasons over the Euro-Mediterranean region were analyzed, focusing on representative land cover classes (bare soil, vegetation, urban areas and waters). Preprocessing steps were applied to standardize the acquisition viewing geometries, and the top of atmosphere (TOA) level of products from the two sensors were used to avoid inconsistencies introduced by atmospheric correction schemes adopted by each operating agency. Overall, the quantitative and qualitative assessments confirm a strong correspondence between the PRISMA and EnMAP hyperspectral measurements across the VNIR spectrum, with SAM always below 0.1 rad. However, the statistical analysis reveals relatively low consistency between the two sensors for the vegetation sensitive spectral window (750–940 nm), where larger deviations are observed with STD of 0.067 and SAM of 0.097, while the NO 2 spectral range (420–500 nm) shows lower SAM of 0.048 and STD of 0.045.

Abstract: Mesoscale eddies play an important role in upper-ocean heat redistribution, yet the mechanisms controlling eddy-induced sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) patterns remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigate how air–sea turbulent heat flux damping modulates eddy-induced SSTA patterns in the Subtropical Countercurrent (STCC) and Kuroshio Extension (KE) regions of the northwestern Pacific. Using satellite observations, reanalysis products, and eddy trajectory data from 2010 to 2019, we composite cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies in different seasons and quantify the relative contributions of monopole and dipole SSTA components. The results show that the STCC region exhibits a larger dipole contribution and a higher normalized SSTA damping rate than the KE region in both warm and cold seasons. This regional contrast suggests that stronger SSTA damping is associated with a more pronounced dipole SSTA pattern, whereas weaker damping favors a more monopole structure. The spatial distribution of the normalized damping rate closely resembles that of the turbulent heat flux response rate, while mixed-layer depth appears to play a secondary role in shaping the large-scale damping pattern. In addition, the damping rate increases with background wind speed, indicating that wind speed may modulate eddy-induced SSTA patterns by enhancing turbulent heat flux feedback. These findings highlight the potential role of air–sea turbulent heat flux damping in shaping regional differences in eddy-induced SSTA patterns and provide a useful perspective for understanding mesoscale air–sea interaction in the northwestern Pacific.

Abstract: In temperate coastal waters, phytoplankton communities often follow a classical seasonal pattern, with diatoms dominating in spring and dinoflagellates becoming more prominent during summer. However, spring-to-summer phytoplankton community reorganization in eutrophic Liaodong Bay remains poorly characterized. Here, we examined seasonal changes in phytoplankton communities and environmental conditions in Liaodong Bay in spring and summer 2025. The phytoplankton community underwent a marked spring-to-summer reorganization that differed from the classical seasonal pattern. In spring, dinoflagellates accounted for 63.51% of total community abundance, with the heterotrophic dinoflagellate N. scintillans comprising 99.56% of this fraction. By contrast, diatoms comprised 91.02% of the summer community, with Coscinodiscus granii, Skeletonema costatum, and other diatom taxa sharing dominance. This reorganization coincided with a seasonal shift in phosphorus regime and nutrient stoichiometry, from low dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP; 0.12 μmol P L⁻¹), dominance of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP; 0.28 μmol P L⁻¹) and high N:P in spring to higher DIP (0.66 μmol P L−1), lower DOP (0.18 μmol P L−1), lower N:P, and higher Si:N in summer. Correlation and redundancy analyses indicated that the spring N. scintillans-dominated assemblage was broadly aligned with DOP-rich and high-N:P conditions, whereas summer-dominant diatoms were broadly aligned with DIP, dissolved silicate (DSi), and Si:N gradients, although not all bivariate relationships were significant. These patterns suggest that potential relative inorganic phosphorus deficiency in spring may have been less favorable for diatom dominance, whereas higher DIP, lower N:P, and higher Si:N in summer were consistent with a resource regime more favorable for multi-diatom expansion. Overall, the phytoplankton community in Liaodong Bay exhibited a non-classical seasonal reorganization from a spring N. scintillans-dominated assemblage, rather than a conventional autotrophic dinoflagellate-dominated stage, to summer multi-diatom co-dominance, coinciding with shifts in phosphorus regime and nutrient stoichiometry.

Abstract: Extreme precipitation along the west coast of North America is often associated with atmospheric rivers (ARs), fueled by evaporation from the ocean. When ARs interact with marine heatwaves (MHWs), they can form compound extreme events with amplified hydrological impacts. Here, we quantify how MHWs influence the intensity and precipitation of landfalling ARs through thermodynamic air–sea interaction processes. We use high-resolution regional coupled ocean–atmosphere ensemble simulations to isolate the influence of large-scale MHW-related sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies while constraining the synoptic-scale atmospheric circulation. Focusing on well-documented AR events during the 2013–16 Northeast Pacific MHW, we show that anomalously warm SSTs enhance evaporation and lower-tropospheric moisture availability, leading to a robust increase in integrated vapor transport and intensified landfalling ARs. The enhanced moisture transport results in earlier onset and substantially increased coastal precipitation, particularly over drought-vulnerable regions of California. Moisture-budget diagnostics demonstrate that this amplification arises from a direct thermodynamic response to SST anomalies, rather than indirect modulation through changes in large-scale atmospheric circulation. Insights gained from this case study identify a thermodynamic pathway linking MHWs and ARs, highlighting the role of persistent oceanic thermal anomalies in shaping compound hydrological extremes under continued climate warming.

Abstract: This paper provides a brief overview of sea waves and examines various models of sea surface spectrum. A model of sea surface variation is presented, and wave scattering problem from rough sea surface successive realizations using the integral equation method is considered. Spectra of a VHF signal scattered by the sea are obtained for vertical and horizontal polarization of the incident field. It is shown that at wind speeds of 3–5 m/s, the scattered signal spectra correspond to the resonant (Bragg) scattering theory; with increasing sea waves there is a gradual transition from resonant to non-resonant backscattering.
