Abstract: Long-term chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) phenology and recurrent high-Chl-a conditions provide important evidence for identifying spatially persistent water-quality concerns in coastal bays. However, seasonally normalized screening of high-Chl-a recurrence at the sampling-cell scale remains limited for subtropical multi-bay coastlines, where regional monsoon forcing, hydrodynamic retention, riverine inputs, aquaculture, and coastal development jointly shape phytoplankton variability. Based on Copernicus Marine ocean-colour records from 2003 to 2024, this study developed a reproducible ~4 km sampling-cell framework for seven coastal bays in Fujian, China. Monthly geometric-mean climatologies, phenological metrics, P90-based high-Chl-a exceedance frequencies, monitoring-priority classes, and exploratory machine-learning diagnostics were derived. Bay-scale phenology showed clear divergence: Sansha and Xinghua Bays exhibited winter or year-end Chl-a enhancement, Xiamen Bay peaked in summer, and Quanzhou Bay reached an early-autumn maximum. Four seasonal phenological regimes further revealed cell-scale heterogeneity, with C2 representing winter-enhanced, high-amplitude cycles and C3 identifying cells with the most frequent seasonally normalized high-Chl-a exceedances. High- and moderate-priority cells were concentrated mainly in Sansha and Xinghua Bays, whereas Dongshan and Quanzhou Bays showed only localized priority cells. Exploratory diagnostics indicated that distance to the bay mouth was the most important correlate of recurrent high-Chl-a susceptibility, suggesting the role of bay-scale exchange and retention gradients. This framework converts long-term ocean-colour archives into spatially explicit phenological and anomaly-screening evidence to support targeted coastal water-quality monitoring and ecosystem management.

Abstract: High-resolution satellite observations are essential for studying fine-scale ocean processes. Yet, present satellite sea surface salinity (SSS) products remain too coarse to resolve many fine-scale structures. We investigate denoising diffusion models as a generative framework for SSS downscaling in a controlled proof-of-concept experiment based on GLORYS reanalysis fields. A multichannel diffusion prior is trained on 1/12° SSS, sea surface temperature (SST), and sea surface height (SSH) fields, and is then conditioned at inference time on a synthetically degraded coarse SSS observation (1/3°) together with high-resolution (1/12°) auxiliary SST and/or SSH. Conditioning is performed through pseudo-inverse guidance, which steers the generated samples toward states that are compatible with the coarse observation while remaining within the learned GLORYS-consistent multivariate distribution. We also test a gradient-enhancement procedure designed to increase contrast during inference. Experiments in the Gulf Stream region compare models conditioned on SST only, SSH only, and both variables. Validation over the year 2020 uses root-mean-square error (RMSE), structural similarity (SSIM), gradient distributions, and temporal Fourier spectra. In the present GLORYS configuration, conditioning on SST substantially improves accuracy relative to SSH alone; combining SST and SSH yields further gains, comparable to a strong convolutional baseline under RMSE/SSIM, while additionally providing an ensemble of plausible reconstructions. The gradient-enhanced sampler increases structural contrast but can risk amplifying part of the variability, illustrating a trade-off between pixel-wise accuracy and structural realism. Overall, the results support guided diffusion as a promising framework for SSS downscaling and uncertainty-aware reconstruction, while showing that transfer to real satellite SSS products will require product-aware observation operators, uncertainty weighting, and independent in-situ validation.

Abstract: Formation of the Mongol-Okhotsk suture belt represents the terminal orogenic event that constructed the modern tectonic framework of NE Asia. However, the timing and mechanisms of the final closure of the eastern Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean remain controversial. Based on integrated field investigations and analyses of microstructures, petrography, mineral chemistry, whole-rock geochemistry, phase equilibrium modeling, quartz electron backscatter diffraction fabric, and zircon U-Pb geochronology, we document for the first time a complete Middle to Late Jurassic Barrovian metamorphic sequence within the Luomahu Group of NE China, providing critical constraints on the timing and geodynamic processes of the final closure of the eastern Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean. Our study reveals that the Luomahu Group constitutes a tectonic collage of Lower Devonian to Lower Carboniferous metasedimentary strata intruded by early Mesozoic magmatic rocks, subsequently affected by Middle Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous syncollisional magmatism, metamorphism, and deformation. The prograde Barrovian metamorphism preserves a clockwise pressure-temperature-time-deformation path superposed by two deformation phases. Phase equilibrium modeling indicates progressive burial to amphibolite-facies peak conditions followed by retrograde cooling in both garnet-staurolite mica schist and garnet-sillimanite gneiss. Both deformation phases correlate with the peak metamorphic stage. D1 deformation is characterized by top-to-the-SW/SSW thrusting. D2 deformation is marked by sinistral strike-slip shearing along NNE-SSW−trending shear zones. Zircon U-Pb dating constrains the peak metamorphic age to ca. 165−145 Ma, with the two deformation phases occurring at ca. 162−150 Ma and ca. 150−144 Ma, respectively. We interpret the prograde Barrovian metamorphism and associated D1 deformation as direct evidence of crustal thickening during the closure of the eastern Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean. The subsequent D2 deformation is attributed to the far-field effects of NNW-directed low-angle subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate, while a potential contribution from the ongoing ocean closure remains plausible. Together with regional data, we integrate our results to establish a west-to-east multistage closure model involving slab break-off, which conclusively demonstrates that the eastern Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean finally closed at the Jurassic to Cretaceous boundary.

Abstract: Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are persistent extreme warm events in the ocean that pose substantial threats to marine ecosystems, fisheries, aquaculture, and offshore energy infrastructure. In 2024, the Yellow Sea experienced the most intense MHW on record in terms of cumulative intensity, with sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies exceeding 5 °C and an exceptional duration of 118 days. Using the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis and GLORYS12V1 ocean reanalysis, this study systematically investigates the characteristics, driving mechanisms, and extremity of this event. Mixed-layer heat budget analysis indicates that enhanced shortwave radiation was the primary contributor to the warming, which is closely linked to the westward-extending and northward-shifting subtropical high. During MHW decay, sea surface cooling is dominated by enhanced latent heat flux, closely linked to typhoon and cold air activities. Further analysis links the positive SST anomalies to the North Atlantic and the Barents Sea warming, which triggered a Eurasian teleconnection wave train. These results highlight the importance of cross-basin climate connectivity in driving regional maritime temperature extremes.

Abstract: The Roman city of Doclea is a key archaeological site of Montenegro, valued for its impressive remains and its role in the nation's cultural identity within European and the Mediterranean history. Doclea was the second‐largest city in the province of Roman Dalmatia, a municipium created in the first century ad and named after the Illyrian tribe Docleati . Since 2017, a multidisciplinary research project has been coordinating the study and enhancement of the city and its territory. The project was the result of an international agreement between the National Research Council of Italy, the Ministry of Science and the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro. The project team implemented multidisciplinary approach, through the application of different technologies and methodologies (satellite, aerial and drone images analysis and geophysical prospections with ground penetrating radar) integrated with historical approaches (archival research, epigraphic and ancient literature review), archaeological surveys and architectonic reconstructions. The Italian—Montenegrin team is striving not only to acquire a better understanding of the city but also for the construction of a credible enhancement project, able to improve the knowledge and the ‘use’ of the site by the local community and tourists. The collected data, in fact, are fully integrated into an innovative enhancement project, which leaves space for new development strategies. The research considers both the visible ruins and those hypothesized through geophysical investigation and remote sensing, anticipating future advances in our knowledge through the opening of new excavation areas.

Abstract: Monitoring biodiversity and climate-induced environmental changes in refugee-affected regions is essential for comprehending ecological degradation and formulating sustainable management measures. The Rohingya settlement regions in southern coastal Bangladesh constitute one of the most ecologically vulnerable landscapes where accelerated land alteration, vegetation removal, and thermal irregularities have exacerbated since the onset of mass displacement in 2017. This study seeks to measure biodiversity loss and evaluate the impacts of climate change on geomorphosites through a multi-index remote sensing methodology. Satellite imagery from Landsat-8, Landsat-9, and Sentinel-2, spanning 2015 to 2025, was processed in ArcGIS to calculate NDVI, EVI, EHI, TDVI and LST values. Spatial and temporal analyses were conducted to delineate vegetation dynamics, ecosystem health, habitat degradation and fluctuations in surface temperature.
